Cats make great pets and are one of the most popular pets in America. While a cat is generally easier to take care of than a dog, they still need plenty of care and attention. Some of these considerations are vet care, food, litter box and attention.
Finding a veterinarian you like and trust is top on the list. There are many veterinarians out there; some with a specialty and some that take all pets. While a vet who specializes in cats can be nice, it is not necessary. Cats are such popular pets that most vets are probably familiar with their care. In that case, think close. Most cats do not like to travel in a car so a vet that is close by is doing them, and you (if they tend to get car-sick) a favor. The shorter time spent in a car, the friendlier your cat will be at the veterinarian’s office.
Food is something you and your cat have to decide on together. While you may want your cat to eat something that is low in fat and high in nutrients, your cat’s taste-buds come first. She or he is not going to eat cat food that tastes like cardboard. You might have to try a few brands before you can find something you and your cat can agree on. There is a reason cats are known as finicky creatures. There are different food considerations if your cat has to be on a special diet; this is something your veterinarian will help you with. And do not forget cat treats. Everyone likes a treat now and then and your cat is no different. And a bowl of milk once in a while would be appreciated.
The litter box can be a source of contention for you and your cat if you do not choose the right one. One that is shallow enough for the cat to get in comfortably, yet deep enough so that most of the gravel stays in it will make both of you happy creatures. Cats like clean litter boxes so you will have to clean it at least once a day, maybe more. There are several litters out there and, once again, you might have to buy a few bags before you find one you can both live with. There is clumping or not clumping, scented or not scented, natural or not natural, cheaper and more expensive. In other words, shop around.
Last, and most important, cats love attention. Contrary to belief, most cats love their family and do not prefer to be solitary. They like to play and cuddle just like children. So cuddle your cat and you will both be happier.
