Birds have one thing in common with humans and that is they can get sick just as easily as we do. When a bird gets sick there are some things that can be done at home to ease their pain, but severe changes in their behavior require a veterinarian’s care. Bird drugs are administered to birds when they have been afflicted with an upper respiratory illness, parasites, a virus or some type of skin disorder.
Common Bird Ailments
Birds can get sick with colds and flu’s just like humans can and a lot of things around the home like the atmosphere, dust, smells, climate, plants, and chemicals can affect birds. The most common illnesses that birds come down with are colds, flu’s, pneumonia, parasites, and skin conditions. A severe cold or flu can be treated with erythromycin, aureamycin, and baytril powders. Antibiotics like tetrasol are used to treat parasites like mites and worms. A worm out gel may also be used to deworm a bird.
Symptoms
When a bird is visibly sick it is usually after they have probably been suffering for awhile. They are very good at masking their discomfort. But if it is obvious that something is wrong it is best to take them to the vet as soon as possible. They may show signs of coughing, sneezing, and their nose may be constantly running. They may even be trembling or they may use their feathers to keep them warm. If they tuck their head inside their feathers there may be a more serious problem. If they have loose stool and difficulty breathing they may have what is called parrot fever.
Another reason that a bird may be distraught is due to stress or some or boredom. It is best to observe the bird and try to keep him healthy, stress free and properly stimulated and after changes are made for the better and there still seems to be a problem take the bird to the vet.
Bird Care and Maintenance
A well kept bird is one that is not stressed, stimulated, exercised and fed well. A bird can live for years if it is kept well. The best thing that can be done for a pet bird is to have a clean cage with toys, a well rounded diet with pellets, seeds, fruits and vegetables according to the species of bird.
Conclusion
A bird can experience common ailments like colds, and flu’s, parasite infestation and feather loss, but if they are well fed and exercised they can live a long time. Any excessive symptoms should be looked at by a veterinarian and regular scheduled checkups are an excellent idea for overall bird health. Birds are very intelligent, friendly companions and if they are cherished and taken care of they can be by our side for a long time.
